I first saw Sammy Shelor and Ron Stewart perform this song together as a duet on stage during a Lonesome River Band show. Ron was the first person I thought of to play fiddle on this album and, since we wanted to feature some old time numbers, it seemed like a natural choice to include this one.

When they were warming up to record this, Sammy asked Ron if they could loosen up on some other tune. He wanted the first time through on Turkey to be while the tape was running to capture the live feel. This was the very first song we cut for this CD and, as fate would have it, the first run though had to be scrapped for a technical problem. Sammy still feels like the "one that got away" was even better than what we have here, but I think this one is mighty fine.

Apart...Yet

"This is one of the most exciting albums I've ever been on, including my fiddle falling apart in the middle of the recording! (Lonesome Wind - could you tell?) I want to thank the guys for their advice on fixing it and preventing me from using super glue to reattach the fingerboard. I just didn't want to leave the studio that day!"
"Getting to record with so many of my heroes was a great treat, especially playing Turkey in the Straw with Sammy Shelor, just fiddle and banjo."
