Sammy Shelor and Tony
Trischka at Doobie Shea
|
On the first day we cut at Doobie Shea, Sammy Shelor was scheduled to record on two songs. In between takes, he pulled out a tape of songs that Dave Denman had sent him and asked us to listen to Daddy's Dream. Sammy thought that we ought to record it since the perfect personnel was sitting right there and that, if we didn't cut it, he would do so himself at some point. Everyone loved the tune so, within an hour or so, they had learned it and laid down the rhythm tracks.

This is a powerful song and Sammy plays this sort of material as well as it has ever been played. All of the solos are strong and the track simply rocks. Adam's mandolin solo especially stands out to my ear. Look for this one at jam sessions for many years to come.
"My main reason for picking this song was the feel and drive it has. I'm always looking for banjo songs in the key of B that work well with the other instruments and this one sure fit the bill. In the B part, I especially like the way the melody works against the changes. It's really simple, but it gets the point across."
"My family and I were in the process of doing some home recording and just having some fun together. The girls were singing great together and the tape turned into 12 or 14 songs. I decided to put 2 or 3 original instrumentals on it so I wouldn't forget them later. 'Daddy's Dream' actually did come to me in a dream one night after doing some of that recording. Since recording with my family has always been a dream of mine, the girls appropriately named the tune and titled the tape, 'Daddy's Dream.'"
"Sammy has this rare ability of finding the groove in a tune and just wallering in it. A friend describes it as that 'Chug-Bang' sound you hear when a train is pulling a grade. Sammy took a simple melody and added so much drive and feeling that you have to play it just one more time. It's exciting to hear Sammy do this tune and an honor to have him as a friend. Sammy you are a motivator!"
